Sun Eclipse

Did you know?

We are sharing with you some surprising and unknown things about South Africa. Did you know about them:

Last week, the total eclipse of the Sun gets everyone in Asia very excited. The path of the Moon’s umbral shadow was not visible from Africa this time, however South Africa’s sky is renowned for its splendid stargazing opportunities and is chosen as the best place to observe the universe in the Southern Hemisphere apart from Chile. Many of the northern constellations could be seen low on the northern horizon in South Africa, but it is the southern hemisphere constellations that attract the most interest, such as the Milky Way, the Southern Cross and the brightest star (closest to the Earth) Alpha Centauri...

The best place to do stargazing and related research in South Africa for astronomy enthusiasts and scientists is Sutherland in the Northern Cape. Its remoteness, high elevation (2 000 metres), the cold and dry climate, and the absence of pollution, delivers clear, cloudless skies. In 2005, the launch of the largest single optical astronomical telescope in the Southern hemisphere makes Sutherland more attractive to the expertise of the world’s leading astronomers. This telescope is scientifically more advanced which is able to look back 13-billion light years in time and tackles unsolved questions about the universe and our place in it.

Apart from the Sutherland, we suggest stargazing places like Kruger National Park for tourists. Some camps in the park have their own powerful telescopes and host nightly stargazing experiences. Actually a stargazing safaris would be special. It offers one the opportunity to wallow in the spectacular stellar sights of the African night sky – along with the possibility of spotting rare nocturnal wildlife. The view, at ground-level and above, is stunning!
